Για τον δίσκο - ορόσημο των Deep Purple "Machine Head" (που κυκλοφόρησε το μακρινό 1972) και το πόσο επηρέασε - άλλαξε την οπτική μου για την μουσική έχω αναφερθεί ήδη (πολλάκις) μέσα από την παρούσα ιστοσελίδα. Έγραφα χαρακτηριστικά:

«Κάπου στο δεύτερο μισό της δεκαετίας του ογδόντα αναζητώντας την μουσική μου (μεταξύ άλλων) ταυτότητα και κατεύθυνση. Μουσικός τύπος (περιοδικά), ραδιοφωνικοί σταθμοί και συγκεκριμένες εκπομπές, δισκάδικα, μουσικά στέκια. Η καθιερωμένη επίσκεψη σε δισκάδικο.

Το μάτι πέφτει σε ένα εξώφυλλο που γράφει Deep Purple κι από κάτω "Machine Head". Για κάποιον λόγο μου τράβηξε το ενδιαφέρον. Να μου θύμιζε το όνομα της μπάντας κάτι; Δεν θυμάμαι. Ακολουθεί αγορά χωρίς ακρόαση (κάτι που έκανα σπάνια).

Η ακρόαση έγινε σε "κανονικές" συνθήκες, στο στερεοφωνικό του σπιτιού μου. Το σοκ ήταν απερίγραπτο. Αναγέννηση και αναβάθμιση. Δεν ήταν απλά ένας πολύ καλός δίσκος (ανάμεσα στους υπόλοιπους).

Ένιωσα ξαφνικά την ανάγκη να κλειδώσω τους υπόλοιπους δίσκους που είχα και να τους αφήσω κλειδωμένους για... αιώνες! Είδα την μουσική με "άλλο μάτι".

Τελείως νέα οπτική και το μονοπάτι άλλαξε, συγκεκριμενοποιήθηκε. Είχα κατεύθυνση και στόχευση. Ήξερα που πήγαινα.»

Ο δίσκος μας "συστήθηκε" με το τραγούδι "Highway Star", ως το εναρκτήριο της πρώτης πλευράς του βινυλίου και εκ των πλέον αναγνωρίσιμων της θρυλικής μπάντας. Το "Highway Star" κυκλοφόρησε και αυτόνομα, ως single, τον Ιούλιο του 1972 στην Ιαπωνία και δύο μήνες αργότερα στην Αμερική.

Στην δεύτερη πλευρά του βινυλίου υπήρχε μία μεγαλύτερη (χρονικά) εκδοχή του ιδίου τραγουδιού ["Highway Star (long version)"]. Για το εν λόγω μουσικό κομμάτι ο Roger Glover είχε πει σε συνέντευξη που παραχώρησε στο περιοδικό Guitar Magazine το 2003:

«This was written specifically as an opener. Famously, we wrote it on a tour bus on the way to Portsmouth. We had some journalists with us who were coming down to cover the gig, and one of them asked us how we write songs. Ritchie said "Like this!" and started chugging out this riff on the guitar.


Ian started singing any crap lyrics he could think of, and before long we just forgot about the journalists and the song came out. As the bootlegs will prove, we played it at the gig that night. The name was just a tribute to the fact that the song was written on the highway.»

Στην σημερινή ανάρτηση θα παρακολουθήσουμε τους Deep Purple να αποδίδουν "ζωντανά" το "Highway Star" στην πρωτεύουσα της Ιαπωνίας (Τόκιο), στις 17 Αυγούστου 1972, με το δελτίο τύπου της μπάντας να αναφέρει σχετικά:

«Based upon the actual footage shot on 8mm cine film of Deep Purple’s performance in Tokyo on August 17th 1972, fans are invited to relive one of the band’s most unforgettable performances of Highway Star.

Considered by the band to be the best show of the three-night ‘Made In Japan’ run, this performance of Highway Star shows Deep Purple firmly establishing their presence as one of the greatest live bands of all time.

Shot from the front row by Mr Masafumi Kato, the original handheld cine footage catches all the moments of MKII’s breathtaking performance and has now been rescanned in HDR 4k definition, adding greater resolution and clarity.

The footage has been set to the new audio mix by Richard Digby Smith, taken from the upcoming Made In Japan Super Deluxe boxsets.

The original cine reels contained many small gaps as the camera reframes and a large gap over Ritchie’s guitar solo, where the cameraman changes reels, which have been filled with graphics and animation depicting a fast and furious car racing to the Budokan venue.»
