Ο δίσκος "Nightfall" είχε μία (εξ αρχής) πολύ δύσκολη αποστολή. Όφειλε να διαδεχθεί ένα μουσικό album ορόσημο ("Epicus Doomicus Metallicus"), το οποίο "βάπτισε" ένα μουσικό heavy metal (υπο)είδος, το επικό doom metal. Ο δεύτερος δίσκος των Candlemass (πρωτο)κυκλοφόρησε τον Νοέμβριο του 1987 και δικαίωσε πλήρως τις (υψηλές) προσδοκίες.
Με νέο τραγουδιστή, τον "Παβαρότι του heavy metal" (Messiah Jan Alfredo Marcolin), έδειξε εξ αρχής τις προθέσεις και τις (ξεκάθαρες) διαθέσεις του. Λέγεται ότι ο αρχικός τίτλος του δίσκου ήταν "Gothic Stone" (όπως το εναρκτήριο ορχηστρικό μουσικό κομμάτι), αλλά ο "Μεσσίας" δεν συμφωνούσε.

Το εκπληκτικό "The Well of Souls", το εξωπραγματικό "At the Gallows End", ο doom ύμνος "Samarithan" (η παραβολή του καλού Σαμαρείτη), τα όμορφα ορχηστρικά (instrumental) πρελούδια - ιντερλούδια, η υπέροχη διασκευή στο πένθιμο εμβατήριο του Σοπέν (τι πιο ταιριαστό για μία doom metal μπάντα). Στο (επιλογικό) instrumental "Black Candles" ακούμε τον Mike Wead (βλ. King Diamond, Memento Mori, Abstrakt Algebra, Mercyful Fate, Hexenhaus κλπ) στην κιθάρα.
Το καταπληκτικό εξώφυλλο (ουσιαστικά ο πινάκας ζωγραφικής "Old Age" από την τετραλογία του Thomas Cole "The Voyage of Life") συμπληρώνει ιδανικά το υπέροχο μουσικό - στιχουργικό περιεχόμενο ενός από τους καλύτερους δίσκους στην ιστορία του heavy metal. Επιβλητικό, αργόσυρτο (κατά βαση), βαρύ (και ηχητικά και αισθητικά), πένθιμο, έντονο συναισθηματικά, θρησκευτικό δέος, η "μάχη" να βγεις από το σκοτάδι στο φως, "οδυνηρό" μα και καθαρτήριο...
