Οι Stratovarius (σύντμηση της κιθάρας Stratocaster και του βιολιού Stradivarius δημιουργήθηκαν το μακρινό 1984 από τον Tuomo Lassila, τον John Vihervä και τον Staffan Stråhlman αρχικά ως Black Water. Stratovarius ονομάσθηκαν το επόμενο έτος (1985) με "νονό" τον Lassila.
Η μπάντα συνεχίζει ακάθεκτη μέχρι και τις ημέρες μας αν και δεν έχει (απο)μείνει κανένα από τα αρχικά μέλη. Έχουν κυκλοφορήσει 17 "ολοκληρωμένους" δίσκους (με πλέον πρόσφατο το album "Survive"), δέκα συλλογές, πέντε EPs (τα τρία πέρυσι ), ένα boxed set, τρία live albums συν μπόλικα singles.
Το single "Deep Unknown" σηματοδότησε την μετα-Timo Tolkki περιόδο του συγκροτήματος. Κυκλοφόρησε τον Απρίλιο του 2009, αποτελούνταν από δύο τραγούδια (το ομώνυμο και το "Higher We Go"), μας σύστησε τον κιθαρίστα Matias Kupiainen και προετοίμασε το έδαφος για τον δίσκο "Polaris" που "βγήκε" λίγες ημέρες αργότερα (15 Μαΐου 2009).
Την μουσική του εν τραγουδιού "υπογράφει" ο Matias Kupiainen και τους στίχους ο "Timo Kotipelto". Βλέπουμε και ακούμε τους Jens Johansson (πλήκτρα), Timo Kotipelto (φωνητικά), Matias Kupiainen (κιθάρα), Lauri Porra (μπάσο) και Jörg Michael (τύμπανα).
