Ο δίσκος "Gutter Ballet" είχε εξ αρχής δύσκολη αποστολή, καθώς ήταν ο διάδοχος ενός από τους κορυφαίους δίσκους στην ιστορία του heavy metal, του "Hall of the Mountain King" που είχε κυκλοφορήσει το 1987. Τα κατάφερε; Ναι!
Όχι μόνο αποδείχθηκε άξιος διάδοχος αλλά πήγε την μουσική πρόταση των Savatage ένα βήμα παρακάτω, κάτι που οφείλεται σε μεγάλο βαθμό (και) στον Paul O'Neill (που ήταν κάτι περισσότερο από παραγωγός του συγκροτήματος). Ο αστικός μύθος λέει ότι ο Paul O'Neil έδωσε εισιτήριο στον Jon Oliva tickets για να παρακολουθήσει στο Broadway το (πασίγνωστο μιούζικαλ του Andrew Lloyd Webber) "Το Φάντασμα της Όπερας" (The Phantom of the Opera).
Ο Jon γύρισε ενθουσιασμένος στο στούντιο και έγραψε το τραγούδι "Gutter Ballet", το οποίο "βάπτισε" τον δίσκο (αρχικός τίτλος "Temptation Revelation" και δεύτερος "Hounds of Zaroff"). Ο δίσκος κυκλοφόρησε στις 23 Ιανουαρίου του 1990 μέσω της δισκογραφικής εταιρείας Atlantic Records και γνώρισε αρκετές επανακυκλοφορίες με πλέον πρόσφατη εκείνη της Ear Music Classics τον Μάιο του 2022.
