Ο δίσκος "Fighting the World" είχε εξ αρχής μία πολύ δύσκολη αποστολή. Ήταν ο διάδοχος της "μυθικής" τριάδας "Into Glory Ride", "Hail to England", "Sign of the Hammer" και όφειλε να φανεί αντάξιος. Και όλα αυτά ως η πρώτη κυκλοφορία σε νέα δισκογραφική εταιρεία, την Atco (παρακλάδι της Atlantic Records).

Η κυκλοφορία του, τον Μάιο του 1987, προκάλεσε σχόλια και "κόντρες". Είναι άξιος διάδοχος; Έγιναν mainstream οι Manowar; "Ξεπουλήθηκαν"; Που είναι τα επικά τραγούδια; Η επιλογή της μπάντας ήταν να μοιραστούν η πιο straight forward πλευρά της μουσικής των Manowar με τις πιο επικές.

Η πιο "κλασικομεταλλική" πλευρά του Αμερικάνικου συγκροτήματος ("Fighting the World", "Blow Your Speakers", "Carry On" "Violence and Bloodshed") αφορά την πρώτη πλευρά του βινυλίου και η επική πλευρά της μπάντας, την δεύτερη.

Αμιγώς ποσοτικά οι φίλοι του συγκροτήματος έχουν δίκιο καθώς τα νέα επικά τραγούδια των Manowar είναι ουσιαστικά μόλις δύο, το "Holy War" και το "Black Wind, Fire and Steel" (το "Defender" ήταν γνωστό από το single του 1983, αν και στο "Fighting the World" είναι επανεκτέλεση και όχι η αρχική εκδοχή του ύμνου).

Στα μάτια μου (και στα αυτιά μου) ο δίσκος είναι ουσιαστικά δύο EPs μαζί, σε μία κυκλοφορία. Η δεύτερη πλευρά ("Defender", "Drums of Doom", "Holy War", "Master of Revenge", "Black Wind, Fire and Steel") του δίσκου αποτελεί μία ολοκληρωμένη μουσική πρόταση (με συνοχή λόγω των μικρών instrumentals που παρεμβάλλονται ανάμεσα στα τραγούδια), με μέση, αρχή και τέλος.

Αν κυκλοφορούσε αυτόνομα, ως ep, με τίτλο κάποιον από εκείνους των τριών τραγουδιών (πχ "Holy War" ή "Black Wind, Fire and Steel"), θα ήταν από τις δισκογραφικές κορυφές της μπάντας. Με το album "Fighting the World" ξεκίνησε η συνεργασία με τον Ken Kelly.

Μελαγχολική διαπίστωση, τρεις από τους συντελεστές του δίσκου δεν βρίσκονται πλέον εν ζωή. Ο Orson Welles (που κάνει την απαγγελία στο "Defender") απεβίωσε δύο χρόνια πριν κυκλοφορήσει ο δίσκος, το 1985, ο drummer Scott Columbus το 2011 και ο Ken Kelly το 2022...
