Το μακρινό 1972 κυκλοφορούσε το ντεμπούτο των Scorpions υπό τον τίτλο "Lonesome Crow". Κιθαρίστες της (θρυλικής) μπάντας ήταν ο Rudolf Schenker και ο Michael Schenker. Ο δεύτερος μετά την κοινή περιοδεία με τους UFO πήρε "μεταγραφή" στην Βρετανική μπάντα.
Αντικαταστάτης του ένας άλλος "θεός" της κιθάρας, ο Ulrich Roth (Uli Jon Roth όπως τον γνωρίζουμε). Ο διάδοχος του "Lonesome Crow" ηχογραφήθηκε τον Απρίλιο του 1974 και κυκλοφόρησε τον Νοέμβριο του ιδίου έτους.
"Fly to the Rainbow" ο τίτλος και αποτέλεσε καλλιτεχνικό σταθμό και ορόσημο όχι μόνο στην εξέλιξη και πορεία των Scorpions, όχι μόνο στα μουσικά τεκταινόμενα της δεκαετίας του εβδομήντα, αλλά της ευρύτερης "σκληρής" μουσικής γενικότερα.
Στον εν λόγω δίσκο μάλιστα παρατηρείται το (οξύμωρο;) γεγονός να συμμετέχουν συνθετικά ο πρώην κιθαρίστας μαζί με τον... αντικαταστάτη του. Χαρακτηριστικότερο παράδειγμα το εκπληκτικό ομότιτλο (και επιλογικό) τραγούδι, το οποίο "υπογράφουν" τόσο ο Michael Schenker όσο και ο Uli Jon Roth!
