Στο δεύτερο μισό της δεκαετίας του ογδόντα άρχισε να κυριαρχεί (εμπορικά τουλάχιστον κι ως προς την απήχηση στην νεολαία) στην αντίπερα όχθη του Ατλαντικού (ΗΠΑ) ένα παρακλάδι του "σκληρού" ήχου πιο mainstream [με pop / FM rock (ή AOR) καταβολές και glam - φανταχτερές εμφανίσεις] "παραμερίζοντας" (κι εν τέλει επηρεάζοντας σε κάποιο βαθμό - είτε συνθετικά, είτε εμφανισιακά) σε μεγάλο βαθμό και τον πιο παραδοσιακό (metal) ήχο.

Μία από τις μπάντες που ξεχώρισαν εκείνη την περίοδο ήταν και οι White Lion. Δημιουργήθηκαν το 1983 και κυκλοφόρησαν τέσσερις "ολοκληρωμένους" δίσκους μέχρι και την (προσωρινή) διάλυσή τους το 1992. [Επανήλθαν το 1999, κυκλοφόρησαν άλλα δύο full length albums και διαλύθηκαν (οριστικά;) το 2013.]

Ο δίσκος "Pride" ήταν ο δεύτερος (χρονικά) των White Lion. Κυκλοφόρησε στις 21 Ιουνίου του 1987 κι "έβγαλε" τέσσερα singles. Το πρώτο αφορούσε το τραγούδι (και μία από τις μεγαλύτερες επιτυχίες της μπάντας) "Wait", το οποίο μάλιστα προετοίμασε το έδαφος για τον δίσκο καθώς κυκλοφόρησε είκοσι ημέρες νωρίτερα (1η Ιουνίου 1987).

Παρόλα αυτά άργησε να γίνει επιτυχία, αυτό συνέβη τον Φεβρουάριο του επόμενου έτους. Ο τραγουδιστής Mike Tramp μιλώντας στο περιοδικό Guitar World (παραχώρησε συνέντευξη στον James Wood) είχε πει για το "Wait":

«There’s almost no origin to that song. The story goes, Vito started playing the riff and the very first word out of my mouth was “Wait." It’s one of the simplest lyrics I’ve ever written, but it’s also the perfect American FM song. It’s right up there with Journey, Foreigner and all those other classic songs. “Wait” was just one of those songs that worked really well in the studio and for the video.»
