Witchcryer - "Nemesis" (video)

"I have gunpowder in my chest instead of a heart now and it escapes my lips shaped like a bullet with your name on it. Soft people become dangerous like that when you destroy the things they hold dearest."
NIKITA GILL

You got what you wanted
Now you say that you need more
If you take it,
I’ll take it all back

You got what you wanted
Now you say that you need more
If you take it,
I’ll take it all back

No use in escaping
I can find you and break you
I am vengeance and retribution

No use in escaping
I can find you and break you
I am vengeance and retribution

I can take you down
I will earn my crown!

There’s no escaping
Your hubris is breaking
I’ll be your unmaking
My sword will take you down!

One thing that I can’t stand!
Is a man without blame!
One thing that I will do!
Is put your hubris to shame!

Anger burnin’ inside of me
I feel I’m goin’ insane
Vengeance is in my brain
And retribution’s my name!

Leave your pride
Wont’cha bow down to me!
And when you’re mine
I’ll make sure you’ll never be free!
Leave your pride, won’t you bow down to ME!

I’m a one woman hurricane
I’ll leave you burnin’ in flames
You’ll never hurt her again
Because Nemesis is my name

Leave your pride
Wont’cha bow down to me!
And when you’re mine
I’ll make sure you’ll never be free!
Leave your pride, won’t you bow down to ME!
Leave your pride, won’t you bow down to me!!!!

Ο δίσκος των Witchcryer "When Their Gods Come for You"

Οι Witchcryer κυκλοφόρησαν το 2016 το demo "The Preying Kind - Demo MMXVI" κι ένα έτος αργότερα το "επίσημο" ντεμπούτο τους υπό τον τίτλο "Cry Witch". Το δεύτερο full length album των Τεξανών doomsters "βγήκε" προχθές. Τιτλοφορείται "When Their Gods Come for You" με την μπάντα να μας εξηγεί περί τίνος πρόκειται:

«“Their Gods Will Come For You” is a new conceptual album from Texas classic doom band Witchcryer, featuring songs about gods across various ages of civilization throughout time.

Featuring thickly-woven epics such as a Faustian tale of a damned soul swallowed whole by an apocalyptic leviathan, an account of a Mesoamerican sun deity teaching its doomed warrior people to fly, and a Roman goddess seeking justice for crimes against women, vocalist/lyricist Suzy Bravo says, "this is the album I’ve been writing in my head my entire life."

Ambitious and dynamic, this is anthemic old-school metal mixed with weighty modern doom!»

Δελτίο τύπου: «Featured in Witchcryer’s sophomore album, “When Their Gods Come For you”, “Nemesis the Inevitable” is a song about vengeance for crimes against women through lyrics based on the mythological tale of Greek goddess, “Nemesis” whose name evokes a meaning of “judgement”, “retribution”, and restoring balance to the world through acts of poetic justice and vengeance to those who committed acts of hubris and crime.

Nemesis, neither good nor bad, punishes those to get what they deserve. Some historians and poets personify her as a winged dark faced goddess wielding an hourglass and a sword. Some say she is the daughter of Nyx (goddess of the night) and primordial god, Chaos. Some believe that she was the one who lured extremely vain Narcissus to the river where he fell madly in love with his reflection and drowned.

Witchcryer vocalist, Suzy Bravo emotionally tells the story of Nemesis through the narration of the vengeful goddess promising to bring a murdering, rapist criminal to justice with lyrics, “You’ll never hurt HER again cos Nemesis is my name!” and “My sword will take you down!”

Bravo recalls inspiration behind lyrics, “During my junior year in high school, a beautiful freshman girl was raped and murdered. It was discovered that another classmate who gave her a ride home after a party she was drunk at the night she was murdered was found guilty and executed. Years after the execution, I found out that several people at that party sexually assaulted her earlier that night. I don’t believe that those people were ever brought to justice and ever convicted for what they did to her before the murder took place.

About 2 years later, a 12 year old girl I know was raped and I had to be the one to call the rape crisis hotline, tell her mother, find help for her and her mother, go to the hospital with them, talk to the police, never find out who the rapist was nor see him brought to justice, and I’ve had to watch her deal with the demons that she’s had to face many decades after it happened to her.

Her rape and my classmate’s death fueled so much anger in me that I’ve never been able to resolve. It angers me that these people continue to exist without ever having justice served to them and then dealing with this feeling of helplessness for not being able to do anything about it. Writing and singing about it helps me work through those emotions and maybe imagine for a minute that the reality is that there is bad ass goddess out there taking care of business.

The music video was created through the collaboration of two Austin videographers with story shots by Erik Bredthauer from Necroblance Photography & Design and band shots by Marcos Morales and Josh Paul from Dirt City Studios. The story shots feature Nicole Adams (as Nemesis), Cooper Lakota Moon (as the killer), Autumn Lee (stalked female at bar), Andy Porter (bartender) and Suzy Bravo (jogger/murder victim).

Bredthauer’s location for these shots took place between East Austin metal venue, The Lost Well and an Austin hike & bike trail. All band “fisheye” video shots were taken at John Petri’s Come & Track It studio. To create the dramatic slow motion effect of the band’s performance, Morales used a videography technique of a Slow/Fast Music Video Lip Sync created by recording the band performing to a sped up track at 150 bpm.»

Bio: «Witchcryer was created by guitarist Jason Muxlow during his time with Chicago doom band Earthen Grave (Ripple Music) and became his priority when he moved to Austin in early 2015.

That summer, he began co-writing songs with drummer Javi Moctezuma; vocalist/lyricist Suzy Bravo joined the band later that year, leading to the release of their demo 'The Preying Kind'. With the final addition of San Antonio bassist Marilyn Monroe (Pillcrusher, Las Cruces), Witchcryer played its first show in April 2016.

Their debut album 'Cry Witch' was released on Ripple Music in 2018, comprising nine songs of classic doom produced by the band and Brant Sankey. The band toured the Southern states with Italian doom band Messa, then made their way north to Chicago later in the year, while playing regularly across Texas.

In the fall of 2019, Witchcryer headed back to producer Brant Sankey’s Studio E in San Antonio to work on the new album, with special guest appearances by doom vocalists Gary Rosas (Ungrieved, Mala Suerte) and Steve Colca (Destroyer of Light).

'When Their Gods Come For You' displays a grander and more epic sound, leaning into the band's rock and metal roots. This concept album deals with deities across various ages of civilization throughout time. It starts with “Devil & The Deep Blue Sea”, a Faustian tale of a damned soul swallowed by an apocalyptic leviathan, Hellmouth, and the narrator’s attempt to fight for their life.

The album continues with the song “Hellmouth” in which the narrator is the Anglo-Saxon demon fish itself. Songs about Greek gods and titans with tales of pride and punishment follow, as well as a Mesoamerican sun deity teaching its doomed warrior people to fly, a Roman goddess seeking justice for crimes against women, the tale of the Blackfoot creation god.

Title track “When Their Gods Come For You” comes full circle, proclaiming that if one does not stand up for what they believe in, someone else will do the believing and choosing for them.

The album will come with a download of a mythological book featuring the album lyrics, and artwork from artists who illustrated each god mentioned on the album: David Paul Seymour (“I Rise!”), John Michael Bowley (“Hellmouth”), Daniel Augustus Marschner ("Nemesis, the Inevitable”), Gerardo Quetzatl Garcia (“Quetzatlcoatl”), and cover artist Kyle Otto.»
