Το 1928 δημοσιεύθηκε στο δημοσιεύθηκε στο Αμερικάνικο περιοδικό Weird Tales ένα σύντομο διήγημα του Howard Phillips Lovecraft υπό τον τίτλο "The Call of Cthulhu" ("Το Κάλεσμα του Κθούλου").
Πιθανότατα ο συγγραφέας δεν το αντιλήφθηκε τότε, αλλά το συγκεκριμένο διήγημα στάθηκε η αφορμή για να δημιουργηθεί ένας νέος καλλιτεχνικός κύκλος (κι ως έναν βαθμό το αντίστοιχο καλλιτεχνικό ρεύμα) και μία νέα μυθολογία, η Μυθολογία Κθούλου (όρος τον οποίο επινόησε ο August William Derleth μετά τον θάνατο του Lovecraft).
Cthulhu ονομάζεται και μία Ολλανδική thrash metal μπάντα, η οποία κυκλοφόρησε προ ημερών το ντεμπούτο της...
Δελτίο τύπου: «In 2018, Thrash Metal band Cthulhu first came to be after several years of rehearsing and performing cover material. Self written material and lyrics kept on pouring out of us and became the music and band we have today.
The formation has seen 35 shows in it's first year, pre-album release, with a set of our own material and just 2 covers to hype the crowd. In February 2021, our first CD album: "Cremator of the Sky" was released, after being postponed multiple times behind the scenes due to the current Covid-19 lockdown in The Netherlands.»
