Ο βόρειος πολικός αστέρας (διεθνώς Polaris) αποτελεί την ιδιαίτερη ονομασία του αστέρα "Α" (άλφα) του αστερισμού Μικρά Άρκτος. Το όνομα (όπως και το συνώνυμο "Αστέρι του Βορρά") προέρχεται από μία προσωρινή κατάσταση: το γεγονός ότι στην εποχή μας απέχει μόνο περί τα 40 λεπτά του τόξου από τον Βόρειο Ουράνιο Πόλο, οπότε όλοι οι αστέρες στον ουρανό φαίνονται να περιστρέφονται (να περι-πολούν) γύρω του.

Μάλιστα η γωνιακή του απόσταση από τον πόλο θα μειώνεται μέχρι το έτος 2100, οπότε θα φθάσει σε ένα ελάχιστο 26,5 λεπτών και μετά θα αρχίσει να αυξάνεται. Αυτή η γειτνίαση με τον Βόρειο Ουράνιο Πόλο ωστόσο είναι περιοδική: ακολουθεί την κίνηση του γήινου άξονα που ονομάζεται μετάπτωση.

Μετά από 25.000 χρόνια περίπου θα υπάρξουν και πάλι λίγοι αιώνες κατά τους οποίους ο Πολικός Αστέρας θα δικαιολογεί το όνομά του. "North Star" τιτλοφορείται το καινούριο δισκογραφικό πόνημα των Einherjer. Πρόκειται για τον ένατο "ολοκληρωμένο" δίσκο των Νορβηγών Viking metallers κι αναμένεται να κυκλοφορήσει στα τέλη του τρέχοντος μήνα...
