Ο Άμπελ Μέροπολ (Abel Meeropol) ήταν καθηγητής γυμνασίου στο Μπρονξ (Bronx) και μέλος του Κομμουνιστικού κόμματος στις ΗΠΑ. Βλέποντας την φωτογραφία του Lawrence Beitler που απεικόνιζε δύο μαύρους (Thomas Shipp - Abram Smith) κρεμασμένους (αφού πριν είχαν λιντσαριστεί) σε δέντρο στο Μάριον της Ιντιάνα έπαθε σοκ.

Μετέτρεψε την φρίκη (που το προκάλεσε η φωτογραφία και η ιστορία της) σε ποίηση γράφοντας (σε τρία τετράστιχα) το ποίημα "Bitter Fruit". Το ποίημα δημοσιεύθηκε το 1936 στο περιοδικό The New York Teacher με τον δημιουργό να το υπογράφει με το ψευδώνυμο Λιούις Άλλαν (Lewis Allan) για ευνόητους λόγους.

Κανένας μουσικός δεν φάνηκε διατεθειμένος να ασχοληθεί με το συγκεκριμένο θέμα κι έτσι το μελοποίησε μόνος του. Η πρώτη παρουσίαση του κομματιού "Strange Fruit" έγινε στο Madison Square Garden κι από εκεί το άκουσε ο Barney Josephson (ιδρυτής του Cafe Society στην Νέα Υόρκη) και το πρότεινε στην Billie Holiday.

Η Holiday το τραγουδούσε κάθε της παράσταση (παρά τις απειλές λόγω του θέματος που διαπραγματευόταν οι στίχοι). Η δισκογραφική της εταιρεία (Columbia) αρνήθηκε να το ηχογραφήσει και η τραγουδίστρια στράφηκε στην Commodore Records (ήταν προσωπικός της φίλος ο Μιλτ Γκάμπλερ) που ήταν "ανοιχτή" σε πιο εναλλακτικά πράγματα.

Το single "Strange Fruit" κυκλοφόρησε το 1939 (με την άδεια της Columbia), αποτέλεσε την μεγαλύτερη επιτυχία της Billie Holiday κι ένα από τα σημαντικότερα μουσικά κομμάτια στο κίνημα των ανθρώπινων δικαιωμάτων της δεκαετίας των 50s και των 60s. Το συγκεκριμένο εμβληματικό τραγούδι ήταν και η επιλογή των Oceans of Slumber για single, το οποίο κυκλοφόρησε χθες...
